Tomotaka Nishikawa was a landscape architect affiliated with the Shikenchiku Kogei Gakuin (School of New Architecture and Design), and served as a faculty member in the design and crafts department. He edited a number of magazines, highlighted the importance of the relationship between a house's architecture and its gardens, and defined the term "garden crafts" to include a wide range of architectural and design elements and structures used in residential gardens. He said that the main goals of "garden crafts" were "to enjoy the outdoor life" and "to communicate with the interior of the architecture and its garden".
