Belgian Modernist Architecture

Maisons modernes bourgeoises: Nouvelle serie.

Single sheet price list prefacing a portfolio of 52 total plates for 26 designs, 2 plates per design. Small folio (14 1/4 x 10 1/2 inches). Cloth-backed leather portfolio, title illustration pasted down, contents loose as issued. Some light soiling and wear to portfolio, some spotting to cloth, light consistent toning to plates, a couple of plates with small areas of spotting, overall very good. Brussels: Librairie des Arts du Bâtiment/F. Salmain & Fils, n.d. (circa 1937).

This portfolio was put together by the firm of F. Salmain & Fils. According to the price sheet, they were a Belgian firm founded in 1900. They worked on designs for the government, for academies, and for various types of trade schools, and won the gold medal at the 1935 Exposition Universelle held in Brussels.

The portfolio contains 26 designs for domestic residences, each with a price given on the price list and illustrated with two plates depicting a façade or front elevation of the building and a floor plan. The designs show an interesting blend of Art Deco and early Modernist influences in their architectural styles, rejecting extraneous ornament and embracing a more minimalist style.

Scarce institutionally; as of May 2026, OCLC locates five holdings of this portfolio in United States institutional libraries.
