UFOs and Cryptids

Vestigia Newsletter. Investigation - Education - Research. No. 1 (1976) through Vol. III, No. 1 (Spring 1979) (all published?)

Ten total issues (including two different issues for Vol. II, No. 4, with a stapled note that for the first issue, the wrong manuscript was sent to the printer and to please destroy the erroneous issue), comprising a possibly complete run of the newsletter on investigations and research into unknown phenomena, 4-8 pp. per issue. Scattered illustrations. Quarto (10 7/8 x 8 1/4 inches). Original self-wrappers, loose as issued. Some light scattered toning, more pronounced on a few issues, issue no. 3 with a repaired tear, a few annotations, overall good. Stanhope, New Jersey: Vestigia, 1976-1979.

This short-lived publication was edited by Gary Szelc and H.P. Shotwell. In the premier issue, a letter from the President introduces the VESTIGIA organization, which i describes as "a non-profit organization of volunteers, whose primary function is to investigate and/or research those areas of science and nature that are, as yet, unexplaines. The list of particulars in this endeavor reaches across all the science disciplines and numbers in the hundreds or thousands...some well known (e.g. Bigfoot, UFOs, Bermuda Triangle, etc.)...some not so well known (e.g. spook lights, sky lines, archeological anomalies, etc.) The investigative approach is scientific, yet over half of the members are not scientists by trade or training. Interest and reliability are the main prerequisites for membership."

The first issue also lays out the four main investigative areas, selected primarily because of their "general nature...and wide appeal", while noting that members are welcome to investigate any other phenomena they find interesting. These four areas are the Sussex Bigfoot, UFOs, "Spook Lights", and the Jersey Devil, each area with its own assigned advisor. The letter goes on to note that, "Again, it is emphasized that the four above areas have been listed because of the strong membership interest in those directions and because they are available for study in New Jersey....Members who do choose other fields are requested to file a copy of their work with the group's Historian/Librarian and are invited to submit articles on their research and findings to the Newsletter."

Other topics outside of the four main investigative areas covered in these issues include "the Lizardman", spirit photographs, spontaneous human combustion, Lake Champlain monsters, and a Fortean "ape" named Oliver. A fascinating publication with zero holdings found on OCLC as of May 2026.
