Soldiers' Guide Map of Jerusalem from Mandatory Palestine

Guide Map of Jerusalem. PDR/MISC/1768.

Single sheet containing a lithographed map of Jerusalem for the use of British soldiers while the city was under British Mandate rule, printed in red and black, with a printed typescript to verso. 14 x 10 1/8 inches. Loose as issued. Small tear along central fold, discoloration along creases, light marginal toning, overall very good. [Jerusalem]: Survey of Palestine, September 1944.

This rare plan of the city of Jerusalem was produced in 1944 by the Survey of Palestine for the Town Major of the Middle East Forces. It showcases 17 particular places of interest, including various hotels, restaurants, pensions, and cafes, such as the Eden Hotel, Daroutis Hotel, Amdoursky Hotel, Palatin Hotel, Regent Pension, Savoy Cafe, Trocadero Cafe, Vienna Cafe, Hesse's Restaurant, and others. The map also highlights in red the sections of the old city that are out of bounds from "dusk till dawn".

Printed on the reverse is a list of 19 rules, "Do's and Don'ts - While on Leave", from the Town Major's Office. These including reporting, handing in arms, hostel accommodation, booking rooms, watching out for your valuables, the Jerusalem Services Club, EFI (Expeditionary Forces Institute) Facilities, boundaries, pricing, mail, religious services, taxi fares, and other useful tips and rules for military. At the bottom of the sheet is added, "DON'T risk V.D., but if you have done so, visit the M.I. Room, Old Fast House, Nr. Barclays Bank, AT ONCE. Always open. DON'T delay, in this case safety is allied to speed."
