Fluxus Newspaper Roll

Ekstra Bladet/Politiken.

Double-sided broadsheet collage from Fluxus founder George Maciunas. Two double-sided newsprint leaves, 23 1/4 x 8 inches each, affixed together to form one long roll. Loose as issued. Small crease at upper corner of 'Ekstra Bladet', some minor chipping with two small marginal tears, light browning, overall very good. Copenhagen: Fluxus Europe Editions, 1963.

This Fluxus newspaper roll was designed by George Maciunas and Tomas Schmit, and printed by Fluxus Europe Editions in 1963. The collage is formed from various newspaper reviews of the first Fluxus concerts in Wiesbaden, Düsseldorf, and Copenhagen, with the two sheets designed to be mounted together to make one long page which could be sent through the mail as a scroll. Most of the clippings are from German and Danish newspapers such as Extra Bladet, Politiken, Berlingske Tidende, Bild Zeitung, etc, but some show the reach of Fluxus events to other international locations, with mastheads from the British Telegraph Herald and Tiroler Tageszeitung, among others. The goal of the newspaper roll was to help publicize the Fluxus movement.

The chaotic layout of the newspaper roll hearkens back to Dada publications of the early twentieth century and is also characteristic of other Fluxus newspapers Maciunas would publish in the following years. The reviews include photographic evidence of performances by Nam June Paik, George Brecht, Dick Higgins, and a group performance which involved destroying a piano. The reviews don't always know exactly what to make of these performances. The Associated Press article by Richard O'Regan reads in part, "This wasn't a barroom brawl. It wasn't a political rally. It was a concert of 'very new music and anti-music' in Wiesbaden's dignified art museum."

From the Fluxus Codex: "The title Ekstra Bladet is a Fluxus pin, being both the name of a Danish newspaper, meaning literally extra leaf. The 'newspaper roll' was a montage of articles on Fluxus from different newspapers that appeared primarily in European newspapers between September and November, 1962. The two-sided work is printed on newsprint, and was used to publicize the movement." (Fluxus Codex, pg. 43).
