Joaquín Torres-García (1874-1949), author of the introduction to this volume, was an influential Uruguayan-Spanish artist, theorist, and author who founded a number of influential art schools and groups, including the Escola de Decoració in Barcelona; Cercle et Carré in Paris, the first European abstract-art group which counted artists like Piet Mondrian and Wassily Kandinsky among its members; the Grupo de Arte Constructivo in Madrid; and the Taller Torres-García in Montevideo.
One of Torres-García's students was Rosa Acle (1919-1990), a Brazilian-born Uruguayan painter. In 1935, Acle joine the AAC (Asociación de Arte Constructivo), and in 1936 her work was reviewed by the Cercle et Carré magazine. Acle had her first individual exhibition in Montevideo in 1939, the catalogue of which is represented by the current volume. The prologue by Torres-García is titled "Rosa Acle y Constructivismo". In it, he stresses that Acle was a promoter of constructivism and said her work reminded him of "Persian and ancient Chaldean art".
Not long after, Acle traveled to Paris on Torres-García's recommendation, meeting his friends Kandisky, Picasso, Lipchitz, and others. She continued her travels and arrived in Australia just before World War II. She lived there for 8 years and took a break from artistic endeavors, before returning to Montevideo in 1947. In 1950, she began painting again and also became a member of the Rosicrucian Fellowship. Her later work demonstrates this interest in the mystical, as well as religious and indigenous iconography.
A scarce catalogue from a noted female Latin American artist who was not widely exhibited; and unusual Latin American artist's book; as of January 2026, OCLC locates seven holdings of this volume in the United States.
