Pre-Fluxus Avant-Garde Art Scroll

Kalender Rolle.

Long printed scroll composed of several sheets mounted together, containing an anthology of works by contemporary avant-garde artists. Approximately 11.5 x 240 cm total, folded. Loose as issued. Some extremely light toning, one small pinhole, obvious creasing along fold lines, overall very good. Wuppertal: Verlag Kalender Ebeling und Dietrich, 1961.

In 1961, Hans Joachim Dietrich and Bernd Ebeling cofounded the Verlag Kalender publishing house in Wuppertal. They published works by their friends and colleagues, as well as many works by members of the Fluxus movement. They served as editors of this "calendar" scroll, which contains a survey of reproductions of experimental artworks by many members of Fluxus and other avant-garde art movements.

The artists featured in this scroll include Jochen Hiltmann, Cy Twombly, Lucio Fontana, Benjamin Patterson, Piero Manzoni, Paul Talman, Jean Tinguely, Heinz Mack, Carlfriedrich Claus, Hal Busse, Oskar Holweck, Yves Klein, Bernd Ebeling, Raoul Hausmann, Carlo Belloli, Hansjoachim Dietrich, Claus Bremer, Gunther Uecker, Otto Piene, Diter Rot, Arman, Wolf Vostell, François Dufrêne, Franz Mon, and Oskar Holweck. Many of these artists were not well-known at the time and have since become legendary figures of the avant-garde of the 1960s.

This Kalender scroll predates many Fluxus scrolls, and undoubtedly served as an important influence in shaping the concept and format of those later publications. A rare and important artifact; as of October 2025, OCLC locates five holdings in North American institutional libraries.
