George Maciunas was a founding member of the Fluxus art movement, and one of the first to organize and perform happenings. At the end of a very prolific artistic career, he developed cancer of the pancreas and liver in 1977. Three months before his death, he married his friend and companion, the poet Billie Hutching, in a legal ceremony in Lee, Massachusetts. Following that, they held a "Fluxwedding" at a friend's loft in SoHo. The bride and groom traded clothing, various Fluxus artists attended or performed at the wedding, and the ceremony text resembled Mad Libs, with random nouns such as "reindeer" and "gargoyles" inserted into an otherwise traditional marriage ceremony. Maciunas died less than 3 months after the wedding. As of March 2025, OCLC locates five holdings in North America.
