Japanese Modernist Architectural Competition

Kokusai Shaonto. [International Gratitude Tower.] Kenchiku shashin ruishu/ruiju [Architectural Photographic Publications, series title.]

50 leaves, including two double-page plates, comprising a few sheets of text scattered between mostly illustrated plates of architectural designs, published as part of a large illustrated series of publications about architecture. Octavo (7 1/2 x 5 1/8 inches). Printed publisher's cardstock portfolio, contents loose as issued. Light soiling and damp-staining to portfolio, light scattered toning to interior, some foxing to first and last sheets, overall very good. Tokyo: Koyosha, 1924 (Taisho 13).

The contents of this volume comprise the winners and honorable mentions from a competition for a tower of gratitude for international aid after the Great Kanto earthquake of 1923. The designs range widely in complexity and dramatics. The influence of Art Deco design is clearly evident in some of the entries. The plates include architectural renderings, elevations, sketches, and floor plans.

The series as a whole is rarely found outside of Japan, and as of December 2024, OCLC locates one copy in Australia and one in Japan, with no holdings in North America.
