A complete run of the small American poetry magazine, illustrated. 16mo (5 1/2 x 4 1/4 inches). Original side-stapled illustrated wrappers. Very light scattered yellowing, no. 2 with a detached image mounted scrapbook-style with discoloration and old glue residue, overall excellent. Ranches of Taos, New Mexico: Motive Press, 1956-1959.
A complete collection in 11 issues of the little poetry magazine edited by American poet Judson Crews (1917-2010) and published by his small press, Motive Bookshop/Motive Press. Crews first opened Motive in Waco, Texas, where he was born and raised, and in 1947 he moved both businesses to Taos, New Mexico, and married photographer Mildred Tolbert. The Naked Ear was printed in a relatively small edition, with a circulation of between 100 and 200 copies per issue, which were distributed amongst poets, editors, and other associates.
The issues featured poetry contributions by Robert Creeley, Wolcott Ely, Crews, Max Finstein, Hyacinthe Hill, Cerise Farallon, Wendell Anderson, Jacqueline Borgermill, Mason Jordan Mason, Carl Larsen, William Heaton, Donn Cantonwine, Alfred Morang, John Benton, Willard Emory Betis, Muriel Loran, Joe Wheeler Drennan, Stuart Perkoff, Vincent Ferrini, Tom Dryce, Trumbull Drachler, Rockwell Schaefer, Norman Macleod, Larry Eigner, William Newberry, Byron Chew, Charles Bukowski, Mike McClure, Agnes Martin, LeRoi Jones, Elizabeth Bartlett, Diane DiPrima, and others.
