The standard monumental work on Florentine illuminated miniatures of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, with detailed scholarly critical catalogue and extensive notes. This fairly scarce four-volume set provides a significant contribution to the general history of Florentine painting and Italian illumination. As addressed in the preface to the text volume, prior to the publication of this set, not much study had been done on Florentine miniatures. "Il campo della miniatura fiorentina è rimasto sino ad oggi il meno considerato della nostra storia artistica, forse per la duplice difficoltà di ricercare il materiale e di giudicarne."
