Some edgewear, scattered paper losses to spines, scattered toning and foxing, overall very good. Wellington: Harry H. Tombs Ltd. 1928-1940.
A complete collection of the journal dedicated to the arts and literature of New Zealand in the first half of the twentieth century. Under the direction of Harry Tombs and C.A. Marris, the magazine "publishes work on art, original stories, plays, poems, essays, and articles of general interest written with distinction and authority - the best work of New Zealanders known and unknown."
A major goal in publishing this journal was for New Zealand artists and writers to have a dedicated space to publish their works. The editorial titled "Ourselves" which begins the inaugural issue of Art in New Zealand, opens with the following statement: "At last our artists and writers have a journal they can justly call their own. In especial, the artists. Heretofore they have had to content themselves for reward with what publicity exhibition time afforded them. Their canvases were hung conspicuously or not so conspicuously for the public to see - or not to see. Then there were the newspapers. In this country, newspaper art notices are for the most part more kindly than constructively critical...Whatever the reason, such notices impart no stimulus to an art that needs stimulating...That being the complain what is the remedy? It is in the reader's hand at the moment." The editors promise within the pages of these issues bring art exhibitions to the readers, to encourage New Zealand writers, and to give artists across New Zealand "a helping hand."
As promised, the issues contain essays, poetry, prose, dramatic works, black-and-white plates, and full-color tipped-in plates reproducing works of art. A valuable set for art collectors and those interested in the arts and literature of New Zealand. A scarce complete collection.
